General information
Background: Originating in the 13th century, Simon Langton was founded in its present form in 1881 and moved to its current site in open country on the outskirts of Canterbury in 1958. The school admits boys at age 11 through the Kent selective procedure, and girls at age 16 from the Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable area. In addition to national curriculum subjects all pupils take two languages from French, German and Spanish from Year 7. Drama and economics are offered at GCSE and all pupils take a course in ICT at GCSE level. Music and drama are very strong, with a full range of orchestras, choirs and ensembles, and foreign tours by music groups. There are school teams in soccer, hockey, cricket, athletics, rugby, tennis, basketball, cross-country and swimming, many of which have been county cup winners. The school won the national under-16 hockey in 1999 and reached the final on three other occasions. Pupils have access to Canterbury hockey and rugby clubs, and to Kent County Cricket Club facilities. The school enjoys well-maintained links with the community, with strong support from Old Boys and the parents' association, which funded a new swimming pool in 1981. Specialist science college status; also maintains strengths across wide variety of disciplines, including theatre studies, philosophy, economics and music; environmental work. Investor in People status (2004). Ethos: 'Our mission is to lead a community of learners who enjoy an ability to think creatively, critically and innovatively.' .
