General information

Background: Founded in 1563, the school moved to its current 31-acre site in 1895. Numbers have risen steadily and the school expanded to four-form entry in September 1997. There are two boarding houses on site, The Lodge for girls and The Grange for boys. A new four-laboratory science block opened in September 1994, a new technology block opened in 1997, followed by a large sports hall and classroom block in 1998. The computer network has been considerably expanded; multi-media language laboratory opened in 2004. Specialist language college status from September 2003; broad range of modern foreign languages includes Mandarin Chinese and Japanese; exchange opportunities with schools in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and China. Strong sporting tradition; music and drama also strong; new music block in 2003. The Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Young Enterprise, public speaking and foreign exchanges are among the many extra-curricular activities offered. After-school care, until 4.30pm (Monday to Thursday). Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Sportsmark (2004); Investor in People status (2005); DfES achievement award (2002).
