General information

Background: The Judd School was founded in 1888 by Skinners' Company from funds provided by the Sir Andrew Judd Foundation. The buildings date from 1896 and have frequently been extended and adapted; modern languages, classics and library recently re-housed in new teaching block; also sports hall added. The original School Room acts as an assembly hall, and recently the stage and lighting have been improved to give a flexible drama facility. There are eight laboratories, a gymnasium, libraries, careers room, sixth-form common room, art rooms, pottery, and design and technology areas. Lawtons, a neighbouring house, serves as a sixth-form teaching centre for economics, politics and business studies. There are three hard tennis courts, a rifle range and an open-air swimming pool. Religious education is given throughout the school and boys may opt to take the subject as a GCSE. Morning assemblies take place daily and are non-denominational. Clubs and societies include Amnesty, art club, bridge club, canoe club, ceramics workshop, chess club, Christian Union, computer club, debating society, dramatic society, electronics club, French club, history society, photographic society, politics society, printing club, theatre club, Voluntary Service Unit, Young Engineers' Club and Young Enterprise. Pupils participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Specialist music college status. Over-subscribed, with more than three applications per place. Ethos: 'Excellence, breadth, leadership, and service.' .
