General information
Background: The school originally opened in 1972 as a first school for children aged five to nine, in small town of Mirfield, between Huddersfield and Dewsbury. In 1993, it expanded for children up to the age of 11; extension added for the older pupils. The buildings are modern and purpose-built, with good grounds surrounding them. Grounds accommodate a pond, small woodland and sports field. Range of extra-curricular activities; good tradition in supporting both music and sport. Older children benefit from a well-established residential trips programme. The school is involved in charity fundraising; organises annual event and works with local community. Close links to St Mary's Church; active parents' and friends' association helps to make the school 'a vibrant and engaging place'. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University and the Teacher Training Agency; designated centre of excellence for initial teacher training. Healthy Schools award; Activemark. Ethos: 'A place where all children are allowed to succeed in a safe, caring environment.' .
