General information

Background: Founded in 1898; original buildings extended in 1930s, 1960s and 1990s; became grammar school following 1944 Education Act; became one of first grant-maintained schools in 1989. Specialist accommodation includes new technology suite and information technology room, recently-refurbished laboratories and new sports hall. Specialist technology college status from 1996. Described as 'outstandingly successful' in annual report of HM Chief Inspector of Schools in 1995, 1996 and 2004; one of only seven schools to have received this accolade on three occasions. Combined specialist language and technology status. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with four applications per place. Sportsmark; DfES achievement award. Ethos: 'A civilised learning community.' .
