General information

Background: Netherthong has been 'rehabilitated and extended' in the years since it was built in 1875. It serves a village close to the small town of Holmfirth and is currently over-subscribed. The majority of pupils come from within the village community, which has expanded and developed considerably in the last 20 years. The school is situated in a 'very pleasant' position in the centre of the village, high above the surrounding land, with 'beautiful' views from the building and grounds. Accommodation consists of seven class bases, an early years unit, two shared activity areas, a hall equipped for physical education, medical/music/food technology/parents room, administration areas, kitchen and resource areas. Extra-curricular activities include choir, recorders, gymnastics, rounders, netball, rugby, football, cross-country, badminton, French and gardening. An after-school care club with places for 40 pupils operates on site until 6.00pm. The school maintains 'strong links' with the local community through youth organisations using the hall for their meetings, and annual events such as the summer fayre and ten kilometre road race. The playgroup raised funds to buy their own building and raise it on land leased from the school and the parent-teachers association also organises events to raise funds for the school. In addition to fundraising for the school, pupils and staff support a number of charities throughout the year. In July 2000 the school gained Investors in People status and in September of the same year became a Beacon school.
