Headteacher: S Wilcox.
Staff: 15 (women 15).
Motto: Portas aperiamus (Let the gates be open).
Background: Gateways opened as a preparatory school in 1941 in response to the need of local parents reluctant to send their children away from home in wartime. It has since developed senior and nursery departments and caters for girls of all ages and boys to the age of seven. The Dower House of nearby Harewood House, the school is set in extensive grounds situated in a rural area between Leeds and Harrogate. It has a Church of England foundation but pupils from all religious backgrounds are welcomed. The preparatory school covers the requirements of the National Curriculum but greater breadth is provided by specialist teaching of French, PE, music, ICT and science. Latin is also taught. A full range of sports is offered including netball, hockey, rounders, athletics, gymnastics, vaulting, trampoline, rugby, football, tennis, swimming, horse riding, squash, golf, ice skating and wall climbing. The performing arts are 'a crucial aspect of the school' and are based around the performing arts centre with music, drama and dance. The children have many opportunities to perform and to watch professional performances, helping them to develop confidence and self-esteem. 'The focus is on a personal approach that balances demand with encouragement in an environment where personal development and improvement is always valued.' All children are selected according to academic ability and compatibility with the ethos of the school, with a broad range of ability welcomed. .
Approach to discipline: 'Gateways is a small community where every member is considered and respected. All staff work hard to create an environment whereby each individual can reach their potential academically and to mature emotionally, socially and spiritually. Discipline is maintained by demonstrating and reinforcing positive behaviour patterns. Pupils are required to behave with courtesy and consideration towards others at all times. The excellent pastoral system supports this goal.'
Uniform: Winter: grey skirt, white blouse, tie, red sweater, blazer, duffel coat, hat. Summer: dress, red cardigan, blazer, hat. 'Strict uniform requirement.'.
Special needs: 'Well-resourced' learning support department with full-time staff. British Dyslexia Institute unit on site.
Inspection: February 2006: 'Gateways School is an outstanding school with many impressive strengths and no significant weaknesses. It meets its aims and aspirations very well and provides an excellent well rounded education for its pupils, founded on a clear set of moral values and a strong sense of purpose. It has made impressive progress from the strong position it was in at the time of the last report. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
Boys' age range: 3 to 7.
Girls' age range: 3 to 18.
