Background: Offering a lively, purposeful and happy atmosphere, Leeds Girls' High School aims to develop latent talents, provide a challenging education and value individuality. The school welcomes diversity, with girls from different backgrounds. Founded in 1876, the school has a curriculum that selects the best of the new and retains all that has proved valuable. Latin and classical Greek are offered alongside IT and business studies, allowing pupils to pursue their own interests and talents. The school considers the close relationship between staff and girls important. Heads of sections and form tutors offer help throughout the day and a buddying system provides new girls with an older friend to help them settle in. A carefully balanced programme of personal, social and health education allows girls to make informed choices about their conduct and attitude. There is an emphasis on self-directed learning and research skills, complemented by two libraries and three computer suites. Music is central and the day often starts with a performance in assembly. Girls also play and sing in city and national youth orchestras and choirs. Lunchtime clubs support taught drama and there are several full-scale productions each year. The school is in the process of merging with Leeds Grammar School, with all age groups scheduled to come together on one site by September 2008. The new school will be called The Grammar School at Leeds and will have coeducational classes in the sixth form and junior school, but single-sex teaching for years 7-11.
