General information

Background: Founded in 1748 by The Reverend Edward Stokes, the school moved in 1963 to its present nine-acre site, where it is acommodated in two buildings, one housing children to Year 2, the other housing Years 3 to 6. In addition to the National Curriculum, children have the opportunity to learn guitar, violin, recorder, cello, flute, clarinet, drum and brass, and there are two choirs and an orchestra. Sports include cricket, soccer, rounders, netball, race walking, cross country, dance, gymnastics and athletics. Teams from the school regularly compete locally and provide representatives at county, midlands and national levels. The school offers a room for individual and group special educational needs (SEN) tuition. The school has received distinctions from Education Extra for the past five years for its extra-curricular provision, which includes computers, an eco committee, school council, schess, Patch Work Kids and sewing. The school achieved the Healthy Schools Award in 1998 and Basic Skills Mark in 2001. Children support local and national charities for the young and the elderly, so they grow to understand that many groups need help. The active and supportive Association of Stokes School raises funds for projects such as the school's adventure play areas and refurbishing the art/technology/cooking room and furniture for the computer suite. It also organises a party for local senior citizens where they are served and entertained by the children.
