General information

Background: Founded in 1893, St Michael's CofE Primary moved to new premises in 1972 in 'pleasant' grounds near to the town centre. The school takes pride in its aim to 'develop mind, body and spirit with great effort made to ensure children are aware of their responsibilities to themselves, each other and the community'. In this vein, the pupils hold an annual charity event and donate the proceeds to a beneficiary of their choice. St Michael's values its relationship with the local community and won the Abbey National Helping Hands Award in 1999 for its work with a group of learning disabled adults. Between 1993 and 1996, it was part of the European Network of Health Promoting Schools, won a WWF curriculum management award for work over the period from 1993 to 1996 and won an English Nature environment award in 1997. Football and netball training takes place after school and at weekends, and the teams have remained unbeaten for four seasons. In addition, pupils may join clubs for French, choir, dance, hand chimes, recorder and cycling proficiency. The Wednesday Club operates in the same way as a Sunday School, offering activities with a strongly Christian theme. The school is oversubscribed with almost two applications per place and waiting lists for each class.
