General information

Background: Founded in 1992, this is a large school offering a very large range of subjects with considerable success. Its 2000 GCSE examination results were the highest ever achieved by a comprehensive school in the county, and it offers more than 40 subjects in the sixth form. A wide range of sporting activities are available and there is a thriving cadet force (army and RAF). The school has its own outdoor pursuits centre in Yorkshire, which can accommodate 40 students plus staff. It runs a master class for gifted and able primary age pupils on Saturdays and GCSE mathematics classes for other primary age pupils of very high ability. It also maintains strong links with local businesses and further links with the community. The school achieved Training School status in 2003 and runs a very successful Graduate Teacher Training Programme. It was one of the first schools to be designated as a specialist Technology College. This is an academic institution with very high standards of achievement and behaviour. The school is over-subscribed, receiving 1.5 applications for every place. The school aims to strive for excellence to achieve teaching and learning of the highest calibre and to ensure the successful academic development of all students. The school seeks to provide an environment in which students can work successfully with members of the local, national and international community.
