General information

Background: Situated on a 'large open' site in Riseholme Road, part of the Roman Road 'Ermine Street' which ran from London to York, this over-subscribed school draws many pupils from the two housing estates on either side of the road. Founded in 1971, following the amalgamation of two secondary schools, Yarborough is an 'outward and forward looking' school which sees itself 'at the heart of the local community'. A 'strong belief in traditional values such as team spirit and school pride' pervades the curriculum. Students with special educational needs are offered individual support and achievements are given 'pride of place'. The school is proud of the quality of artwork displayed around the building. School facilities include new laboratories in the science wing, fitted with a 'high standard' of equipment, 'state of the art' computer rooms and 'excellent' specialist rooms for art and design, including a pottery studio. All pupils can take instrumental lessons and can usually borrow an instrument from the school. Yarborough musicians form much of the county youth orchestra, jazz and wind bands. The school campus is shared with the Yarborough Sports Centre and boasts 'some of the best sporting facilities in Lincoln'. Connections with local business have been formed through a 'Learning with Industry' partnership, allowing student visits and work experience for all 14 and 16 year olds, teacher shadowing, school based business and community activities, and projects undertaken jointly with industry. The work experience programme also sends some students to France. During February 2000, the drama department took a party of students to Prague to put on a performance with its exchange school. 'Our single minded commitment to excellence pays dividends with students leaving school well prepared for life long learning and the world of work.' .
