General information

Background: Catholic school for boys and girls; choir school to Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool; celebrated 150th annniversary of foundation in 2003. Christian Brothers, who remain trustees, began to administer school at beginning of 20th century; institute became St Edward's College in 1920. Moved from city centre to present setting in 30 acres of beautiful grounds in Sandfield Park, West Derby, in 1938. Since then, continual development programme. Strong tradition in academic, music, sport and community service. Healthy Schools Award. Large sixth form; more than 20 subjects at A-level/AVCE. Musically strong: annual season of concerts featuring music of all sorts; many former pupils have become professional musicians. 'High standards are required and academic rigour is demanding, but the school also encourages pupils to explore new learning opportunities. In partnership with parents, it strives to develop independence of mind, self-discipline and self-respect.' Combined specialist language college and performing arts college status. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 4.45pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place. Artsmark (2005); Sportsmark (2004); DfES achievement award (2002).
