General information

Background: Hillborough was founded in 1975 and is located in an inner urban area close to Stockwood Park and Luton Hoo where it serves a mixed catchment area. The semi-open plan buildings are designed using pyramid style blocks. It offers 'very good to excellent' accommodation, facilities, resources and access, set in 'outstanding' grounds which have won local and national awards. There are eight classrooms and a smaller special needs support teaching area, with a computer suite housed in each pyramid. The school also has a library, music room, community facility for adult education groups and a pre-school opportunity playgroup for mothers with handicapped children. 'Extensive' work on the school grounds has resulted in local and national recognition for its garden, conservation and outdoor classroom facilities. The school is 'strong' in performing arts, all children take part in class assemblies and concerts and the school has an accomplished choir. Instruments played include recorder, violin, cello, tabla, brass and percussion. Extra-curricular activities include volleyball, lacrosse, skiing, boxing and other sports, drama, writing and computers. The school has received a grant to support evening and weekend clubs including the core curriculum, performing arts, sports and environment. Hillborough enjoys 'excellent' local community, business links and raises money for several charities. The school was awarded Beacon school status in 1999, received a sports Charter Mark in 2000 and an Excellence Award in 2001.
