General information

Background: Built in the late 1950's, the 'well maintained' school is set in its own 'extensive' grounds with two football pitches, a hockey pitch and 400 metre running track. The school borders the local golf course and a private housing estate. Pupils are drawn from a cross-section of social backgrounds and the academic profile matches the national profile. French is taught from Year 6 and a breakfast Italian class has been set up with the help of the local high school. There are 'strong links and good liason' between the feeder first schools and the high school. Pupils take part in a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities. Approximately a quarter of them play a musical instrument and the school is 'well-known' in the area for its musical productions. Football, netball and hockey are played throughout the school and pupils swim and take part in other competitions. Gosforth East Middle has a number of community links and the local Rotary Club and other businesses are involved with the school. It also raises a 'large amount' of money each year. Staff, governors and parents have 'high expectations' of Gosforth East and the school was included in the 1995-1996 Chief Inspector's annual report as providing 'excellence'. In September 1999, the school was recognised as an Investor in People.
