General information

Background: Situated in rural Norfolk, close to the market town of Diss, Burston Community School became famous after the children went on strike from 1914 to 1939 in support of a sacked headteacher. The accommodation at this small school has severe limitations. Its original buildings date from 1877, a temporary 'horsa' hut built as a dining centre in 1947 now serves as a classroom for Year 5 and 6 children, a temporary portakabin houses the office and the school affords no hall, no staffroom, little storage space and limited working space. In spite of this, the school provides a full curriculum 'to a high standard' which is 'reflected by the school's popularity and test results'. The school grounds have been improved in recent years, thanks to work undertaken by staff, parents and children working together and the school now boasts a well-stocked garden. It has always tried to promote an awareness of the environment and a recycling centre based in the school yard is used by the local community. The school has 'strong' links with the community and provides a 'key central role' in the life of the village. It takes care to encourage the children to think of others and raise funds for a wide range of charities. Extra-curricular activities offered include football, rugby, cricket, netball, tennis, athletics, rounders, board games, French, German, computer, maths games and art, and the school is linked with Holbergskole in Denmark. The school aims to 'produce happy confident children who, regardless of their ability, see education as an exciting and positive experience'.
