General information

Background: Founded in 1980 as a middle school, now a bright, airy non-denominational community school set in extensive grounds. One of two primary schools in Downham Market; since 1984 it has also served the village of Crimplesham and from 1985 has been the designated school for the children of Wereham. Recently improved grounds with tree planting, a wild flower meadow, a pond with boardwalk, ampitheatre under construction. Two adventure playgrounds also installed. Most developments thanks to work of the Friends of Hillcrest Association. Facilities include seven classrooms, an extra classroom for small group teaching, a central reference library, quiet room and specialist areas for art, claycraft, craft, design and technology and food technology. Success in sport includes winning the local area football competition and representing Norfolk in the eastern area kwik cricket finals. Notable performances from pupils in swimming, netball, athletics, hockey and girls' football; two former pupils play for Norwich City Ladies. School playing fields are equipped for football, hockey, rounders, cricket (including an all-weather wicket), netball and athletics. Pond used for science lessons. Strong links with the local community; children perform at the Downham Music Festival and design posters for the Keep Downham Tidy campaign. Children raise money for good causes including Action Aid and Comic Relief. Not over-subscribed at present, but sometimes has a small waiting list.
