General information

Background: The school began as a new secondary in 1953 and became comprehensive in 1978. It occupies 'well-designed and spacious' buildings in a developing country town 10 miles south of Norwich. The school serves a large area of southeast Norfolk from Waveney valley to Broadland, from coastal marshes to rich agricultural land. It has 'extensive' playing fields and an indoor heated swimming pool. New facilities since 1978 include remodelled technology rooms for art, electronics and design, a physics laboratory, preparation rooms and chemical stores, humanities rooms, careers office, drama room, music block, and the modernisation of the home economics rooms. New equipment includes three modern computer suites with 53 Numbus PCs, an 'extensive' range of audio-visual equipment, 'good-quality' printing machinery, video machines and camera, full range of orchestral band instruments and electronic keyboards. The school is not over-subscribed and more than three in four pupils (77%) go on to further education. It is a known centre for canoeing, tennis and swimming and was one of four schools in the United Kingdom to gain a Charter Mark award. 'The school is a well-ordered, hard-working community, with excellent results and a caring atmosphere.' .
