General information

Background: Wymondham College was founded on the site of a former United States Air Force hospital as a technical grammar school. It now occupies an 82 acre site southwest of Norwich, and features a new £1.4 million design and technology centre that opened in 1994, 10 science laboratories, seven workshops, three computer rooms, a sports hall, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and fitness rooms. It is Europe's biggest state boarding school with more than 500 boarders, most paying fees of about one-third of that charged by equivalent independent schools. Some receive Ministry of Defence grants, others come from ex-patriate or European union families. The school operates a house system and produces county and national representatives in a variety of sports, including rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, tennis, canoeing, judo and squash. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the combined cadet force are offered as extra-curricular activities. Specialist technology college status. Over-subscribed, with more than four applications per place. Schools Curriculum Award (2000); Artsmark Gold; Sportsmark Gold; DfES achievement award.
