General information

Background: Founded in 1910, the school is housed in a well-maintained 19th- and 20th-century main building in addition to two more modern buildings, one of which houses sixth form. A new library was opened by Prince Charles in 2003. Set in leafy suburbs 10 miles from Manchester city centre, grounds offer mature and well-kept gardens, tennis courts and two all-weather pitches for hockey and netball. More than 70 extra-curricular clubs, including language and ICT class for pupils, parents and community. Homework club and library open until 5pm daily. Numerous visits abroad to locations such as Iceland, Prague, St Petersburg, Brazil, Ecuador, Canada, China and South Africa. Two orchestras and two choirs; performances in Italy, Spain and Germany, as well as Windsor; next performance in Beijing, China. Under-16 hockey team were national champions in 2001; school was Trafford Young Enterprise champion in 2001. Annual fashion show linked with business as major fundraising event, in aid of Christies Cancer Hospital in 2001. Specialist language college status from 2002; participates in National Languages Strategy, leading to involvement in sustaining and initiating languages in primary schools. Holds British Council's International School award for extensive partnership with schools in many countries, including rural school in South Africa. Developing innovative bi-lingual training programme for Chinese teachers of chemistry, IT, mathematics, and physics. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5pm.
