General information

Background: Formed in 1985 from amalgamation of separate boys' and girls' grammar schools originally founded in 1554; resulting split-site school offers modernised and re-designed sixth-form centre on site of former boys' school in York Street. Since amalgamation, purpose-built specialist facilities have been added for computing, technology, ceramics and music, in addition to new gymnasium. Became grant-maintained in 1991; became foundation school in 1999. All pupils take 10 GCSEs; in sixth form, four AS subjects in Year 12 and three A-levels in Year 13 out of choice of 27; in addition, all students take General Studies A-level. Young Enterprise Scheme, Sainsbury Engineering Education Scheme, annual three-day industry conference for Year 12 pupils and week-long work-shadowing for Year 13; also Fourth Dimension venture schemes, expeditions, and numerous foreign field trips and visits. Success in competitive sports, with county representatives in soccer, cricket, tennis, golf, cross-country, and athletics; England representatives in skiing. Also offered are choir, school orchestra, swing band, wind band, debating, and exchange links with France, Germany and America. Specialist language college status from September 2006. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Schools Curriculum Award (1997).
