General information

Background: Founded in 1907; located in quiet conservation area near city centre; specialist technology college since 1995; main building is Victorian, with art department in older Georgian house. Excellent specialist facilities include all-weather sports pitch; new technology block opened in 1993; also new extensions for mathematics and languages, and new science laboratories. In addition to mathematics, languages, technology and sciences, sixth-formers can choose from theatre studies, media studies and psychology A-level. Takes top 25 per cent of ability range. Many extra-curricular clubs include astronomy and ICT. Musically strong; stages joint annual musical production in local theatre with Lancaster Royal Grammar School. Strong links with sponsors include BAE Systems. Runs masterclasses in science and mathematics for gifted children in local primary schools; specialist staff teach technology, mathematics, science and ICT in link primary schools. Many foreign visits include Peru (2000), Brazil (2001), Egypt (2001), Inidia (2006), and France and Germany annually. Gives equal priority to the personal and academic development of pupils and has relaxed, happy atmosphere, very friendly, supportive and caring with excellent relationships. International Schools award. Specialist technology college status; specialist language college status from 2006. Over-subscribed, with 1.6 applications per place.
