General information

Headteacher: Andrew Fleck, appointed in 2003.

Background: Ashville College in Harrogate believes that every child can excel at something and provides a broad curriculum and rich programme of cultural, sporting and extracurricular activities to help pupils find their niche. Founded in 1877 by the Methodist Church, religious education is a strong feature of the curriculum, although the school welcomes members of all faiths and none. Former Ashville students are well represented at the best universities in the UK and overseas. High academic expectation is supported by a programme for gifted and talented pupils and there is an extensive scholarship programme which includes additional tutor support and master classes in a range of disciplines. Pupils come from a range of social and cultural backgrounds and there is a thriving boarding community with students from many different countries. Sport is a key college activity and Ashville has an enviable record in local and national tournaments in rugby, cricket and netball. Facilities include tennis courts, playing fields and a heated indoor pool. Ashville students perform in rock bands, sing in the choir, play bridge, go rock climbing, and win prizes for public speaking and dramatic performances. A number are also involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. Travel is an important part of education in the senior school. Every two years students go to Malawi to help out in an orphanage established by a former Ashville teacher. Extensive redevelopment has started in the junior school and is planned for the rest of the college.

Alumni: John Grieve, former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police; Ian Dodds, designer; Jim Carter, actor.

Higher education: 98% (0 Oxford 3 Cambridge).

Special needs: A learning support department provides one-to-one and group support for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, Asperger's syndrome and general learning difficulties. It can also cope with pupils with speech and language disorders by arrangement.

Inspection: 2004: Ashville College Senior School has many strengths and few weaknesses. It gives its pupils very good discipline and teaching, especially in moral and spiritual matters, and looks after them all, boarders and day pupils, very well. The pupils respond by behaving and learning very well so that they achieve good standards of attainment and progress in all years. The school monitors its own strengths and weaknesses, some of which the inspection has highlighted as areas for improvement.
