General information
Background: King James's School founded in 1616 by Dr Chaloner, with a charter from King James I. The school occupies an extensive site on the York Road into Knaresborough. It has enjoyed a long and distinguished history in which the continuing factors have been academic excellence and service to the community. The school is a highly successful, mixed comprehensive school, catering for students aged 11 to 18. It is situated in extensive grounds. Its catchment area extends well beyond the small historic town of Knaresborough. Buildings and facilities of the school are constantly refurbished and updated. Current building projects include a new 600-seater hall for school and community use. Outstanding sporting facilities include extensive playing fields, a sports hall, two gymnasia, pavilion, all-weather pitch and nine tennis and netball courts. Multi-media resources, Internet access and suites of computers are well spread throughout the whole school in keeping with facilities that one would expect of a Technology College. A purpose-built design block caters all aspects of technology as well as the creative arts. There are large numbers of opportunities for participation in a wide range of sports from recreational clubs to competitive school teams. The major winter sports for boys are football, rugby and basketball. The major summer sports are tennis and athletics, alongside cricket for boys and rounders for girls. It also has an active Duke of Edinburgh?s Award Scheme enabling members of the school to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including watersports, mountain-biking, climbing and expeditions. The school aims to provide a secure and safe environment within which to foster moral, spiritual and personal values. Accountability for self and others is stressed.
