General information

Background: Ripon Grammar School was founded in the 16th century and moved to its current site on the outskirts of Ripon in 1874; extensive playing fields and cathedral views. It occupies Victorian buildings with further blocks dating from 1962, when the school became co-educational after merging with the local girls' school. More recently, an extensive building programme has expanded facilities for the the library, science, computing and technology. New classroom block planned for mathematics, technology and engineering. The school has a swimming pool; it offers rugby, cricket and hockey, among wide range of sports. It is the only state school with provision for weekly and full boarders, housed in two separate houses. Latin and classical studies are offered at both GCSE and A-Level; range of A-level subjects has widened by using distance learning and partnership with local college. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place. Specialist engineering college status; GCSE astronomy, statistics, systems and control, and product design introduced from September 2006. AS engineering for some GCSE students to be introduced in 2007. Ethos: 'Aims to develop the potential of each pupil in a caring community where both academic excellence and a well-rounded education are the goals.' .
