General information

Background: Set in pleasant grounds on edge of Skipton; founded by the Petyt Trust in 1886; still occupies original buildings, together with more recent additions including laboratories and classrooms; new dance-drama studio opened by Dame Judi Dench in 1996; new library opened in 1998; further extension in 2002. Sixth-form centre located in West Bank, a newly-refurbished Edwardian house on opposite side of Gargave Road; alos electronic whiteboards, latest ICT technology, wireless network, and electronic communication system for home to school. Strengths include academic results in all areas, with particular emphasis on mathematics, science and technology; high standards in dance, drama, art and music. Strong Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; successful Young Enterprise. Takes top 30 per cent of ability range. Over-subscribed (after selection test), with 1.1 applications per place. Before-school care, from 8.15 am; after-school care, until 5pm. Specialist engineering college status from September 2003. Investor in People status; DfES achievement award. Ethos: 'A caring, highly-academic school which promotes independence of thought, team working and a business approach to teaching.' .
