General information
Background: Opened in 1968; situated in own grounds near centre of Harrogate; buildings include Bede House, listed Edwardian building, where sixth form is largely housed. Transformation in quality of school buildings and environment in recent years. Has synthetic grass surface (2004), and state-of-the-art ICT facility, including 40-station data-logging network (2004). Constance Green Hall serves as chapel; venue for concerts and significant school occasions. Sixth form organised in association with St John Fisher Catholic High School for more than 30 years; largets school-based sixth form in the country. Reputation for extended curricular activity. Outstanding reputation for music; chamber choir named as BBC TV's Songs of Praise Choir of the Year in 2006, appears regularly on television. Performs at national level in variety of sports, particularly basketball, athletics, badminton, football, cricket, netball and hockey. International links with schools in Australia, Uganda, Sri Lanka, France and Germany. Identified as 'outstandingly successful' in Ofsted's 1997 and 2003 annual reports, one of only 120 secondary schools to receive the accolade twice in the last 10 years. Specialist science college status from 2003. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. International School status (2006). Healthy School status (2006); has its own catering website. Beacon status (2001); DfES achievement award (2001). Ethos: 'A warm-hearted, friendly and flourishing school.
