General information
Background: This is a small school catering for the whole of the relatively remote island. Pupils tranfer to the Orkney mainland at the end of either S2 or S4, according to pupil or parental choice. The school depends on some itinerant teachers who fly out daily from Kirkwall. The original building dates from 1874 but was upgraded in 1960, in 1987 when a community wing was added, and in 1991 when a swimming pool was added. 'Because we are small we are able to achieve high academic standards and have high levels of discipline. There is something of a hot-house atmosphere, which enables pupils to attain high standards in the range of school activites.' The school aims to provide a happy, secure and stimulated environment.
