General information

Background: The school serves the entire island community of Sanday. In addition to providing education for primary and secondary pupils to the age of 16, the school is a community centre with facilities used by Sanday residents of all ages. Accommodation is of a 'very high standard'. It has been regularly upgraded since it was built in the 1960s and most recent renovations have provided a swimming pool, library, community facilities and a nursery. Other facilities include a gymnasium/hall, 'well-equipped' computer room, large playing field and hard courts. The school offers a broad education for children, enhancing the curriculum in the upper stages where necessary 'by the use of innovative technologies'. It has won awards for its range of extra-curricular activities, which vary from kite making to highland dancing, and for ICT management, citizenship, education and environmental matters. A full-time teacher is responsible for children with special educational needs (SEN), supported by classroom assistants. The school is well supported by its community, particularly with its extensive programme of excursions and personal development opportunities.
