General information

Background: Checkendon School was founded in 1840 by the Rector at the time, the Reverend William Crabtree. It is situated in the heart of the beautiful village of Checkendon, within an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Chiltern Hills of South Oxfordshire, and prides itself on cherishing each child?s academic, moral, social and physical development in a happy and industrious community. The original victorian school building was first enlarged in the 1900s, and then at various times in the intervening years, culminating in their most recent expansion which was completed in 2001, and which today provides a full range of educational and recreational facilities, including a very well equipped school hall, as well as a kitchen, library and computer suite. The school has a wildlife garden, various playgrounds around the school, as well as a good range of play equipment. Each year field trip is arranged for the upper junior children, who are offered the valuable experience of staying in a field study centre to explore a different environment away from home and to face individual challenges. Activities include canoeing, caving, abseiling and hill walking, as well as high level assault course. Many festivals and events are held throughout the year and the school is very much part of village life. At harvest time and during Christmas, children give gifts to the elderly and the school is fortunate to be able to use the adjacent village hall and the parish church for services and festivals. The school aims to establish a caring Christian atmosphere, which encourages each child to develop towards fulfilment in life and to contribute to the good of society. .
