General information

Background: Opened in 1896 to provide commissioned entry into Royal Navy Corps and civil service; moved in 1945 to its current location in former Stoke Military Hospital buildings, which date from 1797; only boys' grammar school in Plymouth; serves wide rural area as well as the city; takes top 25 per cent of ability range and offers some entry at 12+, 13+ and 16+. Works closely with two girls' grammar schools, two Catholic comprehensive schools and Eggbuckland Community College for extra-curricular activities, shows, and some A-level courses. Overlooks extensive playing fields; recent facilities include new refectory, sports hall and library/central resource area. Has own study centre in Brittany, visited by 400 boys every year. Wide curriculum for able pupils, including Classics, a second modern foreign language, expressive arts, and technology. Sixth-formers can take up to five A-levels, choosing from 23 subjects. Wide range of sport includes basketball, sailing, soccer, and athletics. Specialist engineering college status. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place.
