General information

Background: Non-denominational selective school founded in 1911; moved to current site in 1938. Housed in handsome, mellow red-brick buildings with some deco features, facing pleasant lawns and playing fields, although school lies near heart of city. New buildings blend in with existing architecture. Takes pupils from wide area, many from across River Tamar in neighbouring Cornwall. Newly-equipped computer suites; attractive sixth-form centre; new art suite; new library, and technology suite. Many county players and some national representatives in hockey, netball and basketball. Latin taught, with French, German, Italian and Spanish. Good take-up for A-level science, mathematics, and languages. High proportion of girls learn musical instruments. Flourishing industrial links. Specilaist language college status. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Beacon status; Leading Edge status (2003). Ethos: 'A caring community that acknowledges the needs of each individual.' .
