General information

Background: Eggbuckland opened in 1979 as a purpose-built school in nearly 50 acres of parkland on a green field site. It mainly serves the north-eastern suburbs of Plymouth but also draws pupils from furtehr afield, especially into its large sixth form. The college has 'generally very good facilities', especially in ICT, technology and science, all of which are areas supported by its specialist technology college status. In addition to National Curriculum subjects, the college teaches GCSE dance, vocational subjects and a variety of examined ICT courses, including Accredited Academic Partner Microsoft Training. Eggbuckland has 'a reputation for its wide and excellent sporting and PE provision' which extends to its community programmes as well as music and drama. Wherever possible, extra-curricular activities are designed to give students the responsibility of managing their own learning and further experience. As a community college the site-based staff run vocational, leisure and sporting courses for hundreds of local students of all ages, as well as supporting youth work, adult basic education and family education. 'We aim to maintain a professional learning environment where students can flourish, both learning from their teachers and developing as individuals and gaining skills and responsibility in as many areas as possible, The college thrives on the discipline of work and achievement.' The school is over-subscribed, receiving 1.3 applications for each place.
