General information
Background: The school was established in 1874, and is one of the oldest girls' schools in the country. It comprises traditional and modern facilities in a secure site near the centre of Plymouth. Levels of attainment are 'very high'. Well-equipped specialist rooms are dedicated to the study of art, geography, history, mathematics, modern languages and music. Five science laboratories offer a full range of facilities. A new classroom block and language laboratory was built for the English department and opened in 1997. The school has a well-stocked learning resources centre with comprehensive computer facilities, including one of four interactive whiteboards and a plasma screen. The learning resources centre has two suites of computers containing 64 machines plus a satellite room of 15 computers for smaller groups. Every teaching room around the school also has computers and in addition to this there is a sixth form suite of computers. The learning resources centre is also able to provide digital cameras and digital video cameras for students to use. The library area is stocked with approximately 8000 books that are exchanged on a regular basis. There are four fully-equipped technology rooms, including a new dedicated CAD CAM room, construction laboratory, new food technology room and textile room. Sports provision includes the gymnasium, two indoor games spaces, and netball and tennis courts, with tennis also taught at the Hill Lane Tennis Club. Brickfields is used for hockey and athletics. There is a swimming gala every summer. Recently, a purpose built sixth form centre was opened, providing the sixth form with a superb facility for study and relaxation. It includes private study and ICT facilities. The school has a strong tradition of providing first class education in a well ordered and good humoured environment in which every individual is valued.
