General information

Background: Opened in 1904 as Poole Secondary, the school was co-educational for a time but has been a single sex school for boys since the late 1930s. It moved to its present site, bordered by a belt of trees close to heathland on the north side of town, in 1965. Several extensions to the building were built in the 1990s, including a technology block, fitness suite and classroom, arts block, science laboratories and classroom wings. Major investment in PC networking and internet links has been made since 2002. Years 8 and 9 now complete a GCSE in ICT; new classroom wing, including computer suite and technology area, opened in May 2002. New cricket nets (funded by a Lottery grant) and tennis courts. Renowned for sporting success: South West athletics champions, Dorset cricket champions, national and international success at sailing; strong Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, with eight gold awards in 2004. Specialist mathematics and computing college status; administrative centre for Dorset Further Mathematics Centre. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Investor in People status; DfES achievement award (2002). Ethos: 'A stimulating, rewarding and supportive environment, promoting personal excellence through commitment and service.' .
