General information

Background: The original village school was founded in Petersham in 1851. The Russell School is a non-denominational community primary school for children between the ages of three and 11. It has a well-developed environmental area, three well-stocked libraries and a science room. The school also has a nursery since 1977. The school aims to develop children's knowledge and understanding of computer and associated technology in order that they can use them confidently as a tool. This school has a good range of both tuned and untuned percussion instruments, which children use to create their own music, as well as to perform to others. It employs a part-time music teacher who works with class teachers in developing music across the school. Extra-curricular activities are one of the strengths of the school. Variety of clubs which the school offers include football, netball, cricket, choir, recorder, music keyboard, gardening, art/craft, country dancing, ballet, French and many more. The children in the school have varied religious backgrounds that it respects and nurtures. It encourages understanding of the different faiths throughout the world and learns about each other's customs and festivals. The school has large playing areas that include small and large football pitches and a netball court. It also has two halls for indoor games, dance and gymnastics. The school's mission is to create a community with a commitment to working together to further the aims of the school and to pursue excellence. .
