General information

Background: Established in 1979, close to centre of Southport, in largely-residential area on the east side of the town. There is little manufacturing industry in the area. Since 1993, it has extended its catchment area and widened the range of programmes it offers; draws students from a raidus of about 12 miles. One of only 15 institutions in Britain to be awarded the Learning and Skills Council Beacon status for outstanding teaching, learning, leadership and management. Termly college magazine, The Voice; college radio station; thriving drama, with annual production; orchestra and jazz band. One of the first sixth-form colleges to house its own internet cafe. Recently-expanded media and music departments. Facilities include two lecture theatres: one 60-seat theatre is located in the Millennium Centre at the heart of the college, with large display screen as well as video and audio; the other 80-seat air conditioned theatre and conference centre in the Fearn Building, with interactive whiteboard, computers, video and DVD. A drama theatre is in the West Building, close to the college's Madisons Deli and New York City Diner; a recently-refurbished large area, suitable for musical and dramatic events, capable of seating an audience of up to 150. Learning resources centre includes 80 networked computers, more than 100 study places and 20,000 books, journals and videos. Computing services include all terminals linked to colour and monochrome printing, internet access to all, and some have scanning and CDR facilities. Silent study area available.
