General information

Background: The school building dates from 1959 and is located in Netherton, a very large urban post-war development on the outskirts of Liverpool, with a high incidence of one parent families and unemployment. St Oswald's has a 'flourishing' after-school activity programme ranging from choir and guitar to a Kids Excel keep fit class. Community links are 'very important' to the school. For example, pupils sing carols for Shelter in the local shopping centre every Christmas and last year took part in Radio Merseyside's 'United in Song' recording. Pupils are 'very enthusiastic' about attending school and there has been a 'marked improvement' in attainment in recent years. St Oswald's believes that parental involvement has been the key to this rise in standards and has organised Parents as Educators courses in literacy, maths and early learning skills.
