General information
Background: The school opened in 1964 as a secondary modern and became a comprehensive in 1976. Its name comes from a 10th-century Saxon palace whose foundations were found during the excavation of the site, within a mile of Cheddar gorge. In 1993, a joint-use leisure centre was acquired, and a new library has recently been created. The school strengths are sports, drama and music. Pupils have participated in a German exchange for over 15 years and there are links with schools in Kenya.
