General information

Background: The school opened after comprehensive reorganisation in 1974, having been created from the former grammar schools and a secondary modern. It is situated in the north west of Yeovil and takes pupils from about 21 partner primary schools in and around Yeovil and North Dorset, with some travelling from as far as South Petherton, Sherborne, Queen Camnel and Yetminster. This provides Westfield with a 'comprehensive mixture of town and country pupils'. The school is housed in two main buildings with a 'pleasant, open aspect' and adjoining playing field. The upper site serves as a tutorial base for Years 9, 10 and 11 pupils, the lower site for Years 7 and 8. The school is 'renowned' for science and creative arts, extra-curricular activities and out of hours learning, and has 'very good' links with parents. 'Education at Wesfield is based on a partnership between the school, parents and pupil. The school values all individuals equally, positive relationships, the development of the whole person, individual achievement, spiritual and moral development, high quality teaching and learning, a stimulating and safe environment, partnership with the community and continuous improvement. It is recognised as a very friendly environment.' The school is over-subscribed, receiving 1.2 applications for every place. .
