General information

Background: Opened in 1938, the school is situated near the centre of Rathfriland and enjoys a panoramic view of the Mourne Mountains - 'arguably the best view from any school in Ireland'. During the past 30 years there have been two major extensions and the accommodation now comprises 10 classrooms and a multi-purpose hall. Over the same period, three neighbouring schools have closed and their pupils have transferred to Iveagh. Other facilities include two libraries, and technology and design work areas. Outside, a corner of the grounds is preserved in its natural state and incorporates a pond, wild flowers, grasses, shrubs, trees and plants to preserve a refuge for wild life. The school offers a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities including football, cricket, hockey, netball, a scripture union, science clubs and a gardening club. Sports are played competitively in local and regional leagues. A part-time teacher caters for children with special educational needs (SEN) in a dedicated classroom. The school obtained the Best-Kept School Award in 1997 and gained the Eco-Schools Award in 1998.
