General information

Background: Founded in 1873 as boarding school for boys; owes existence to generosity of Samuel Watts, a brewer, who provided in his will for school to be created giving 'an English, classical and agricultural' education to boys. Girls admitted from 1918; became senior grammar school offering places to selected pupils at 14+ in 1971. Offers choice of 20 subjects at GCSE and A-level. Ulster schools cricket cup finalists twice; Ulster schools hockey cup winners twice, rugby finalists once; All-Ireland girls hockey champions (2003). Former pupils have gained provincial and national representative honours in various sports. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Ethos: 'The pursuit of academic excellence, supported and underpinned by a pupil-centred, caring pastoral care system; an environment of maximum challenge and maximum support.' .
