General information

Background: Churnet View Middle School is located on the edge of the town of Leek. The school was purpose-built with separate teaching bases for each year-group and is fully accessible and equipped for pupils with motor disabilities with ramps on all doors, no stairs, and special toilet facilities. There are specialist music teaching areas, including practice and performance rooms, rooms for food and textile technology, art, resistant materials, a graphic art studio, science laboratories, information technology and general science areas, a library, French rooms, and audio-visual resources rooms. Sports are catered for with a gymnasium, changing rooms with showers, tennis courts, hockey, football, rugby and small practice pitches, a running track, and high jump and long jump pits. In addition to curricular sports, these facilities are used for after-school football, netball, rugby, gymnastics, basketball and table tennis. Pupils may also choose to join extra-curricular clubs for dance, photography, art, cookery, chess, choir, recorder, guitar, library, pottery, craft, needlework, computers, science, orchestra, drama, maths, puzzles and the school newspaper. Each year-group takes day and extended educational visits, which include trips to France, youth hostels and field study centres. All pupils take a first aid course, earning the school a Three Crosses award from the St John's Ambulance service. In 1995 Help the Aged awarded Churnet View the title of Most Caring School in Britain following pupils' continued work with the elderly. The school aims to create, for everyone, an environment of opportunity within a culture of success.
