General information

Background: Originally opened in 1957, Madeley High serves a large, mainly rural area to the west of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Considerable extensions have resulted in first class facilities for the growing school. As well as football and hockey pitches, there is a superb sports barn with netball and tennis courts and a sprung-floor hall with facilities for dance and gymnastics. Various sports are played socially and competitively, sometimes against other schools. Pupils' successes are celebrated and recorded on the sporting roll of honour. Pupils can also learn musical instruments and join the choir, orchestra, recorder group, dance group and performance group. Other extra-curricular activities include Latin, chess, art, computing, public speaking, book club, environmental club and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Educational visits abroad are sometimes arranged, and exchanges take place with schools in France and Slovenia. The challenging but supportive curriculum encourages around 80 per cent of leavers to remain in education or training. Co-operation between the school and parents is seen as extremely important and there is an active parent teacher association. In September 2002, Madeley High, together with Blackfriars School in Newcastle, was designated a specialist school with Technology College Status. The school aims to provide an environment, which fosters and nurtures each individual's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. .
