General information

Background: St John the Evangelist operates on two sites, the Avenue site for pre-reception and Key Stage 1 classes, and the Gloucester Road site for Key Stage 2 pupils. Since it opened in 1932, the school has been expanded and refurbished to cater for increased numbers of pupils. Italian is taught to all Key Stage 2 pupils, who have the opportunity to correspond with children in Italy as part of their cultural and lingustic education. After school, children may participate in activities such as German, chess, computer skills, football, short tennis and cross-country. The school's musical tradition has been developed over the past ten years and children are encouraged to learn instruments. Those who do are automatically members of the school's orchestra and may audition for the county orchestra. St John's receives visits from the police, fire and ambulance services, nurses and grandparents to speak to pupils. The community links are further strengthened by visits to local residential care homes for the elderly. Charity fundraising is encouraged throughout the year for Cafod, which is the school's main beneficiary.
