General information

Background: Capel St Mary is a modern school which has been open on its present site since 1960. It was 'heavily' extended during the 1970s as the village grew and was finally modelled into its present state in 1993. The school stands on 'large, attractive' grounds and is housed in modern buildings that include activity areas, outside classrooms, a school hall, kitchen, library and music room. The playing field is 'spacious' and in 1996 was upgraded environmentally to include shrubs, adventure play areas and a wild garden. The school has an ongoing policy of improving the quality of its grounds and this is given 'considerable support' by the parent-teacher association. Capel St Mary enters 'every available' sports tournament at Ipswich District level and at East Bergholt level, and pupils have found success at rounders and football. A 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities including many sports, debating, drama, guitar, recorders, singing, art, embroidery and religious education, supports the main curriculum. The school's links with the community are supported by Christmas entertainments for the elderly when clergy of all denominations visit the school. Pupils support charities of topical interest plus one annual charity.
