General information

Background: Claydon High serves a 'pleasant rural area' just outside Ipswich. It is surrounded by its own 'spacious' playing fields and occupies buildings of a variety of vintages, with the school dating back to 1937. It became comprehensive in 1977 and became 11 to 18 in 1997. It has a joint sixth form shared with Thurleston High School, Ipswich. 'Popular subjects operate at both sites, but where there is only one teaching group, the arts are mainly based at Claydon, and the science and technology courses at Thurleston, with free transport between the two sites.' Extra accommodation is needed to meet increasing demand from outside the catchment area. The school has 'outstanding' results in arts and humanities and describes itself as 'a caring school, with attention to individuals and a firm focus on maximising academic achievement. A school where teachers are happy to teach and pupils want to learn.' .
