General information

Background: Opened in 1935 as Holbrook Area School, it was renamed Holbrook County High in 1977, when it became a mixed 11-16 comprehensive. The over-subscribed school serves a rural community on Shotley peninsula, an area of 'outstanding natural beauty' on a 10-acre site on the outskirts of the village of Holbrook. It has 'successful' teams in most sports, particularly basketball, and several girls are chosen for the England basketball team each year while the school's under-15 team were national champions in 1995. Music 'flourishes' with the school invited to perform at Snape Maltings Concert Hall. 'We pride ourselves on having a friendly and welcoming atmosphere which stresses the value of individuals and the importance of maintaining good relationships. the approach to learning is businesslike and well-controlled. Well-qualified and committed teachers and support staff working within a low pupil-teacher ratio means pupils feel valued and levels of achievement are exceptionally high.' .
