General information

Background: Opened in 1963, the school is situated in north-east Ipswich. It is housed in a 'very attractive' single-storey building, the exterior of which was 'completely refurbished' in 1999. The school grounds occupy more than six acres and among the facilities are seven classrooms, administrative offices, a 'large' assembly hall, library, swimming pool, two playgrounds, 'extensive' grounds and two playing fields. Most children attending the school live in the local neighbourhood. St John's parent-teacher's association gives 'excellent support' to the school by showing an 'active interest' in the children's learning, as well as providing financial support. 'High quality' after-school care is provided by the Victory Club. The school has 'close links' with its local church; the vicar is a school governor and each fortnight takes school assembly. Fund-raising for local and national charities involves a sponsored walk every year. St John's is linked with six other European schools and the pupils 'regularly communicate' by email and letters with the other children. The school is currently over-subscribed and received 42 applicants for 30 places in 1999-2000. .
