General information

Background: Founded in 1840 as a secondary school, St Margaret's catered for all ages until 1963 when it became a primary and was extensively re-modelled. Further building work was completed in the early 1990s. The school occupies a small site at edge of the town centre near Christchurch Park. It admits pupils on the basis of the governors' admissions policy. About 70 per cent of the children come from the local area, while the rest come from the wider Christian community. Extra-curricular activities include netball, stamp club, short tennis, badminton, dance, football, art and orchestra. There is a strong musical tradition with all pupils able to learn violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, flute and a variety of brass instruments. The school has a thriving orchestra. There are strong community links, with local churches, senior citizens' groups and businesses. Pupils support both local and national charities such as FIND (Families In Need) and the Tear Fund, among others. The school is awarded DfES achievement award (2003) and training school status (2000). The school has a strong Christian ethos. They are reflected in the way the whole school supports and cares for each other. .
